Experimental Film and Video Finds its way into the Oscars! (Kind of)

Published by Rick at 10:41 pm under Film & Video, Art

Skipped the Oscars tonight to go out and watch Pan’s Labyrinth, which was definitely not a 98.. but then again my go-to genres are documentaries and comedies, not horror and fantasy.

I did see the new IPhone commercial that ran for the first time during the Oscars:

which is quoting heavily from Chrisitan Marclay’s “Telephones” (1995) :
(clip of Telephones is at minute 3:40)

Which is kind of quoting Matthias Mueller’s “Home Stories” (1991):

Which is probably quoting something else too..

  1. […] The commercial was based on piece Marclay did in 1995 called Telephones. Apple approached him for re-use rights, he wasn’t interested, so they simply made their own version of it. Homage? Rip-off? It was widely discussed in the blogosphere. […]

I underestimated how entertaining Maino is. Not that it’s a high level of entertainment but he’s tolberable compared to some of the other new names that have popped up.
